Two Classes for an Associate Degree?
{How Pendleton Woods, '46, graduated with just 4 credit hours.}
|
Pen Woods on the FSJC campus in 1946. |
Pendleton "Pen" Woods, '46, sent us a letter recently
explaining how he'd managed to graduate after taking just two classes at what was then Fort Smith Junior College — and how he met his wife of nearly 62 years, Robin Freeman, '47. Watch for the rest of Woods' remarkable story in a future issue of Bell Tower, The Magazine of UA Fort Smith.
I graduated from Fort Smith High School in 1941 and that fall enrolled in the University of Arkansas in the journalism department. World War II began for our nation the following December. I joined the Army Reserve Corps in 1942 and was called to active duty in 1943. I was given credit for my sophomore year, even though I had not completed it (as was the case of all reservists called to active duty during the middle of a semester).
After three years of military service, which included five months as a prisoner of war, I was discharged at the end of 1945. Instead of returning immediately to the university, I decided to gain some professional experience before returning. I took a job with the Southwest American daily newspaper in Fort Smith, where I became sports editor. more

>What's Your Story?
{Meet your sweetie at UA Fort Smith? Tell us about it.}

Pen Woods' story of campus romance isn't the only one we've heard. Several couples we know met as students at UA Fort Smith, one alumnus proposed to his wife on the Campus Green, and one couple actually got married in the shadow of the Bell Tower. Have you got your own story of campus romance? Email it to us! We love getting photos, too!

>'An Invaluable Experience'
{Rachel Hobson, '05, on the College of Business, grad school, and her job now}
|
Rachel Hobson, '05, calls her time at UA Fort Smith "an invaluable experience." After finishing her bachelor's in Business Administration, she went on to a master's in Communication at the University of Arkansas at

of Business alumni in April 2009.
|
Fayetteville and then, in summer 2008, landed a position as Brand Communication Manager at Walmart headquarters. We asked her about the high points of her education, what it means to be a UA Fort Smith alumna, and the story behind Walmart's new brand.
The essence of business: In Professor Bob Sell's Operations Management course, he had us work on a teamwork exercise. The success or failure of this project depended on the decisions that were made by the team.
As an undergrad, I didn't want to do teamwork; I wanted my grade to be based on what I did. But that experience was one of the best learning experiences in my four years of undergrad.
I worked on a team of strong-willed, dynamic personalities. They represented a variety of ages and experiences and viewpoints, and it taught me that teamwork and being able to communicate with people in a significant way is the essence of business.
Teamwork isn't a game of follow-the-leader. It's about discussion, it's about conflict resolution, it's about working through challenges and coming to a decision together. And that's something I do every day in my job. more

>Past and Future: Both Present

players from the early years of Fort Smith Junior College. The reunion was prompted by a gift of $10,000 to the University from player Bill Sengel, '42, in honor of Doyle Cole, '42, captain of the 1941 team, and their coach, Frank Jones. The gift will fund athletic scholarships.

Sengel, who lives in Virginia, was unable to attend, but six former players were honored — Jack Smith, '49, "Benno" Friedman, '48, James Goddard, '47, Roy Gean, '47, "Swede" Lundquist, '47, and Robert Cockreham, '41, — along with former coach Ted Skokos, two of Doyle Cole's sons, and Frank Jones's daughter.
But as we commemorated UA Fort Smith's past, we also stepped into the future. The reunion coincided with the modern-day Lions' first game as provisional NCAA Division II members, a 22-point victory over University of the Ozarks.
